There are pros and cons to selling online on both Tmall and Taobao. It’s really up to the individual company which of these two Chinese e-commerce sites they want to sell through. These are some aspects that I think impact this decision, but don’t let it stop you from having your own opinion on things if you disagree! This is just one point-of-view~~

Benefits of Selling Online on Tmall: Being able to target Chinese consumers without intermediaries, +The reach is huge, There are big ads with vibrant images which catch people’s attention, Chinese consumers trust the app. Has a global version for companies that don’t have a Chinese business license yet.
Cons: Somewhat expensive and high entry requirement, although Tmall has been working on making it easier for smaller and mid-size companies to sell on their platform.

When it comes to being a merchant on Taobao:
Benefits: Anyone with a Chinese business license can sell on Taobao. The price of selling on Taobao is reasonable. The pool of Taobao users is immense!
Con: Does not receive the same level of trust that Tmall. Deposit varies on your industry and will change every year according to your success on the marketplace, which can make selling on Taobao a lot more costly, Alibaba wants you on Tmall.
